About photoblog @ jtp

Welcome to my photoblog

This is a photoblog of random images from daily life.

It started as a WordPress blog, but then I realized the limitations of WordPress for photblogging and decided to give pixelpost a try. I really like it so far.

I'm a photographer and web developer living in Sacramento, California. I started out my career working as a photojournalist for a variety of newspapers in Northern New Jersey. Some were staff jobs, others steady freelance clients, some were both.

Here is a run down of the Jersey gigs...

  • Today Newspapers (Wayne, NJ)
  • The Daily Advance (Roxbury, NJ)
  • The Herald-News (Passaic, NJ)
  • The Hudson Dispatch (Union City, NJ)
  • The Bergen Record (Hackensack, NJ)

In 1993-94 I took a leave of absence from the Record and went to Ohio University to get a masters degree in visual communications.

In 1994 I launched my first website called The Photojournalist's Coffee House and moved it to my server here after the internet service provider I was using shut down unexpectedly. The Covington's Homeless section of the site is from images from my masters thesis project.

After leaving the Record I went to the Detroit Free Press as a web designer and helped to launch their newspaper website. After two years there I moved back east and took a job as Multimedia Editor at the New York Times on the Web.

Always on the go, in 2001 I moved to Sacramento and started working as a freelance photographer and part-time college instructor. I taught photography at Califoria State University in Sacramento and taught some internet classes at a local community college here.

In 2003 I began working for the Sacramento Bee as the photographer in the capitol bureau. I was tasked with taking photos to go with stories about politics and public policy issues and worked with a group of 8 reporters in the capitol bureau.

About two years later I left the Bee to work as the photographer for California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. I spent 18 months documenting the office of the governor and travelled widely across the state and on a few international trips with the governor and first lady Maria Shriver.

In December 2006 I left the governor's office to start a new internet company with a couple of friends. In June of 2007 we launched Muckety.com, a website that specializes in relationship mapping and stories about relationships.

In an effort to keep myself involved in photography I do freelance work as well as this photoblog.

I hope you enjoy it.
